Younger Than the Octogenarian Epiphanies
Sally
âOh,â I say.
Why on earth did I think Iâd be able to fool Dinty? My glass feels very heavy, and I put it down.
âChrist, I canât believe she went ahead with it,â he says, but though his words seem cross, his voice isnât. Not at all. He takes a swig of his drink. âThis is really nice, try it.â
Itâs like alcoholic cream, but even its superior bubbles canât stop me feeling utterly flat.
âWhen did you realise?â I say, in my normal voice.
âLove your accent. English, right? Heck, I knew something was off straight away. You hug differently.â
He goes on, âBut even if I hadnât guessed, Iâd have known for definite when you ordered fries.â
I sigh. âI always knew carbs would be my undoing. I wish I was disciplined like Epiphanie.â
âOh, I donât mean you having fries,â he says. âShe does eat junk food occasionally. No, it was when you said âpleaseâ to the waiter. And then you were really nice to him when he said he didnât have what you wanted.â
How is it that I keep forgetting her lack of social politeness, when itâs clearly such a fundamental aspect of her personality? I guess because itâs causing me to question my twelve-year devotion to her. Stan would not be impressed by what heâd call her âhauteurâ. I wondered if Paul was trying to get Epiphanie to be Sally-polite back home, and how that was going.
âYouâre the girl we saw in Manchester,â he says.
âYes, thatâs me.â I lower my voice, in case creepy chest-staring waiter is eavesdropping outside the door. âSally Marshall.â
âGreat to meet you, Sally,â he whispers, and smiles. He has a lovely smile.
The waiter oozes in with our food. The kale fries are surprisingly nice. Dinty is bothered by the lack of protein in my meal and cuts off a generous half of his steak and gives it to me. It is delicious.
âYou know,â I say, âI donât think being Epiphanie is very good for me.â
âNo?â
âWeâre just so different. Having to be like her is affecting me in strange ways.â
âAll famous people are odd, in my experience,â he says. âShe is more famous than most, but sheâs not as odd as she could be.â
âI think itâs probably a good thing that thereâs only a week left. I miss my old life.â
âAre you married?â
âYes, to Paul. Ten years.â
âKids?â
âNo.â I never say more than ânoâ to that question, and thereâs something about the way I say it that stops people asking any more, which is my aim. Dinty, however, is an unusual person.
âIâm sorry you havenât, because I think you want them,â he says, so kindly I could cry.
âHow can you know that?â
âYour face when you said ânoâ.â
âYouâre an observant fellow, arenât you, Mr Flores?â
âI try to keep my eyes open. An eye for detail is a good thing.â
âThatâs funny, thatâs what Cheetah said.â
âCheetah?â Dinty looks rattled for the first time this evening. âThat asshole.â
I hastily change the subject. âSo, my husband Paul is looking after Epiphanie at our home.
